Agentic Work Management: Managing Work in the Age of Human-Agent Teams

As organizations adopt AI agents, a new challenge is emerging: how do you effectively manage work when both humans and AI agents are participating in execution?

This challenge is giving rise to a concept increasingly referred to as Agentic Work Management.

Workflow diagrams, task panels, and team coordination interfaces surround them, representing agentic work management and human-agent teams. The image highlights the concepts of clarifying, coordinating, governing, and completing work through collaboration between humans and AI.

What Is Agentic Work Management?

Agentic Work Management is the practice of managing organizational work in environments where both humans and AI agents contribute to achieving outcomes.

Rather than focusing solely on automation, Agentic Work Management focuses on how work is clarified, coordinated, governed, and completed when AI agents become active participants in the workflow.

In this model, AI agents are not simply tools that respond to prompts. They can execute tasks, make decisions within defined boundaries, coordinate information, and complete portions of work autonomously.

Why It Matters

Many organizations are investing heavily in AI agents, but technology alone does not guarantee successful outcomes.

As AI agents become integrated into day-to-day operations, organizations must answer fundamental questions:

  • What work should be assigned to humans versus AI agents?

  • Who is accountable for outcomes?

  • How is work coordinated across people and agents?

  • How is progress monitored and governed?

  • How are exceptions and escalations handled?

Without clear answers, organizations risk creating new forms of confusion, duplication, and operational friction.

The Shift From Automation to Coordination

Traditional automation focused on predefined rules and repetitive tasks.

Agentic systems introduce a new level of autonomy. AI agents can often determine how to accomplish a goal rather than simply executing a fixed sequence of instructions.

As a result, the challenge shifts from building automations to managing coordination between humans and AI agents.

The organizations that succeed will not simply deploy more AI. They will develop better systems for coordinating work across human-agent teams.

Human-Agent Teams

A growing number of technology vendors are describing the future of work as one where humans and AI agents operate together as collaborative teams.

In these environments:

  • Humans provide judgment, oversight, creativity, and accountability.

  • AI agents provide speed, scale, analysis, and execution.

  • Both contribute toward shared organizational outcomes.

This makes effective work management more important—not less important.

Looking Ahead

The rise of AI agents does not eliminate the need for work management. In many ways, it increases it.

Organizations will still need to clarify objectives, coordinate activities, manage dependencies, monitor progress, and ensure work is completed successfully.

The participants performing the work may be changing, but the need for effective work management remains constant.

As human-agent teams become more common, Agentic Work Management may emerge as one of the defining organizational capabilities of the AI era.
